I realised something today, something that I’m not proud of: I sometimes judge people on their looks.

This is not ok with me.

I started to think about why I do it, and I was able to pin-point when it all began: HIGH SCHOOL. That cruel time where you are judged every second of the day. Back then I was ostracised for talking to losers and geeks and those who just didn’t fit in, and for refusing to do what the in-crowd did. But they got to me.

I didn’t wear short skirts because people told me I didn’t have the legs for it and I believed them. I started judging people shaped like me for wearing short skirts. It gave me issues, being told what to wear. The magazines had a lot to do with it too. That’s why I don’t read them. They are mind a suck.

But I am not the only one.

I see it all the time, we do it to each other. We do it to ourselves. Society is a bitch to women and girls and we don’t even see it happening. It really is time to stop. Time to stand up for each other and let us make our own choices.

This lady was giving me dirty looks in Big W today because I had no makeup on and was wearing a hoodie and jeans. That’s what I wear to go to Big W, I don’t get dressed up to the nines for a trip to the shopping centre, I couldn’t be bothered.

Good on her for dressing up to leave the house, that was her choice as was mine to wear my hoodie and jeans. Maybe if we can take a different attitude, as difficult as it is, women can feel free to wear what they like, and do it for themselves not anyone else.

I am working hard to stop myself from this bad habit. I’m not perfect and I know that I will lose my way. But if we want to make this world a better place for everyone to feel safe in themselves, then we have to be accepting of each others choices.

We don’t have to like everyone we come across, but we don’t need to write them off for their fashion choices.
