Project: How to Make a Softie Christmas Ornament

by Dannielle Cresp on October 20, 2010

I’ve got another project for you this month! And this time it’s one I actually did for you myself!!

This is what we will be making:

This one has lots of photos because I can’t bare to leave anything out and for you to be confused, so get ready for a long post!

Lets get started!

What you will need for to make this:
- Fabric
- Ribbon
- A heart shape – cut one out of plain paper, doesn’t matter what size. Mine measures 10cm at longest point
- A gel pen or air soluble marker
- Stuffing
-Scissors, a sewing machine and a needle & thread for hand stitching

Fold the fabric with right sides together and pin the pattern to the wrong side. This will make the two pieces you will need.

Cut carefully around the edge of the pattern.
Note in this picture where the two round marks are to the top of the screen, as I will use them next.

Where the two round marks were I use the pen and added two dots to the pattern. They are 3cm a part, leave at least 2cm from the base of the heart when placing your own.

Now cut the ribbon to 22cm long (or longer if you please) and pin it, folded in half to the right side (the outside) of the fabric.

Line the two ends with the dip in the heart. Make sure that the pin is on the wrong side of the fabric, as shown.

Fold should be at the base of the heart.

Now grab the folded part of the ribbon and move it so that it is sticking out between the two marks we made before and pin as shown.

This is so we don’t sew this part in.

Re-attach the other heart piece so that the outsides are facing each other and the ribbon is in the middle. Pin them.

Now it’s time to sew them together. The seam allowance for mine is 6mm from the edge, set yours to what ever you feel comfortable with, remembering that the bigger the seam allowance the less in left showing.

Put your needle in the fabric at the lower mark and forward stitch 3, backstitch 3 and then sew around the heart following the edge as a guide. Read on before starting this step.

Following the edge as you’re sewing be sure to catch the ribbon at the top. Keep following the edge until the upper mark. Stop backstitch 3 and forward stitch 3.

Hooray, the machine part is finished!

Now cut off the loose threads.

softie ornament 11 dannielle cresp

See that the ribbon is attached at the top of the heart, but is free at the gap and the backstitching at each end.

softie ornament 12 dannielle cresp

Carefully snip around the heart. About 0.5cm ruffly. Not at the gap though. Don’t cut the thread. (see next picture)

softie ornament 13 dannielle cresp

See how the snips have been made all around the seam, you can cut a straight line at the base of the heart (not through the thread). This is so the heart will bend into shape.

softie ornament 14 dannielle cresp

Turn the heart in the right way through the gap.

softie ornament 15 dannielle cresp

Add stuffing through the gap. Add as much as you like. The more in there the squishier it is.

softie ornament 16 dannielle cresp

Now your softie is stuffed there is only one more step. Close the gap.

softie ornament 17 dannielle cresp

Slip stitch the softie closed. If you need help with this try this site

Hooray! You have your own softie ornament for your tree or christmas gifts or even to liven up your desk!

I hope you enjoy making it!

What did you think? Was it easy to follow? Will you be making one this year? Tell me in the comments.

Hello

Hi, I'm Dannielle. I'm a blogger, traveller, ideas strategist, colour fiend and a lover of pretty things.

This year I'm making a dramatic change and moving half way across the world and I'm bringing you along for the ride.

I am trying to follow these two simple ideas: write what you know, and tell the truth.

It's about sharing what is real, both the good and the not so great and especially the heartstoppingly amazing.

You can find out more about me here.

What’s happening?

In January, 2013 I will be leaving Australia for a 2 year 5 week adventure in Canada with a six week detour across the USA on the way.

I will be sharing this journey and all the things I discover along the way. Look for the category The 27 Adventure to find the posts. I have loved travel since I made that first solo trip at 18 and I can't wait to see where this adventure takes me.

Read about how this adventure started here.

And find out my WHY for changing my plans.
